JAX News: Frontier Service to end May 31

"Nonstop service to Denver ending May 31

Jacksonville's only nonstop flight to Denver will end May 31 as Frontier Airlines reorganizes in the midst of bankruptcy and burdensome jet fuel costs. When Frontier filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition two weeks ago, the Denver-based airline said it would not be canceling any flights. But Frontier announced Wednesday it would be pulling out of Jacksonville and four other cities so it could redeploy jets in markets with the best prospects for "long-term profitability." "

It's always a bummer to lose service of an airline from the spotters viewpoint, because variety is what we live for. It's to be expected, though, that a still developing O/D market like JAX would be cut in these days of $100 per barrel of crude. Catch 'em while you can fellas. They won't be here for long.

JAX News: New Concourse A to open this week!

"JACKSONVILLE, FL - Air travelers next week will notice some big changes at Jacksonville International Airport.

Currently two new concourses are under construction with Concourse A west servicing Delta, Northwest and Airtran opening next Tuesday, May 6.

"It is really looking like a big city airport right now," said JIA spokesman Michael Stewart.

A moving walkway is one of the new wrinkles in the concourse and is a first for the airport. A new food court is also under construction and will open shortly."

This is pretty big news, because as anyone who has flown through JAX recently knows, the concourses are showing their age. From the outside, the airport looks like it's composed of three trailers, all lumped together. They haven't undergone any major updates since they were first constructed in the 1960's, so a big change should be noticeable as the new A opens this week. Concourse C is slated to open in November of this year.

Greater Jacksonville Aviation News is created!

Forgive the unprofessionalism of this post, but it's to describe my purposes in publishing this blog.
I've decided that it's high time there's one source for the comings and goings of the JAA and Navy Jax airport systems (including JAX, CRG, VQQ, HEG, NIP, NRB, and others sporadically as I see fit). Be the change you want to see in the world, and all that, right? (Okay, maybe that's a bit too deep for a news blog about aviation...moving forward.)
I intend to update this any time I come across news articles or hear rumours of things that are going to go on in the area, I'll try and post them here for the knowledge of the JAX spotter community at large. Perhaps this will even serve as a means to build a spotting community in town (maybe there is one that I just don't know about...that wouldn't be too outlandish, I tend to miss lots of things).
If you happen to come across something that I've missed or would like to share something with me (or gripe about the horrible quality of my postings, etc.), send me an email at jaxavnews(at)gmail(d0t)com. I'll try and post it on the blog if it's good.

Blue skies and good lighting!
